James R. Evans

James R. Evans

Dr. James R. Evans is Professor of Quantitative Analysis and Operations Management and Director of the Center for Performance Excellence in the College of Business at the University of Cincinnati.  He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in industrial engineering from Purdue, and a Ph.D. in industrial and systems engineering from Georgia Tech.

Professor Evans began his career in 1975 focusing on network flows, mathematical programming, heuristics, and discrete optimization. He was part of a research and practitioner team that reached the finals of the INFORMS Franz Edelman Award for Achievement in OR/MS in 1996.  He developed an interest in emerging spreadsheet optimization and simulation methods, which led to several textbooks in the quantitative analysis field.   Dr. Evans has also had a strong interest and influence in promoting creative thinking in management science and decision sciences. His innovations in incorporating creative thinking principles within management science teaching led to his receiving the Decision Sciences Institute/Alpha Iota Delta Innovative Education Award in 1984.  Subsequently, he wrote a unique book, Creative Thinking in the Decision and Management Sciences in 1991, and a series of “Creativity in MS/OR” columns for Interfaces.

However, Dr. Evans is perhaps best known for his contributions to quality management education.  In 1989, he and coauthor William Lindsay published The Management and Control of Quality, which was the first text on quality written expressly for schools of business. This market-leading book, now in its 8th edition and titled Managing for Quality and Performance Excellence, led to him and Dr. Lindsay receiving the 2003 Philip Crosby medal from the American Society for Quality (ASQ).  Accordingly, his professional interests gravitated toward the quality area.  Evans was selected to serve on the Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award from 1994-2001, and later on the national Panel of Judges from 2004-2007. He has published numerous research papers in the quality management area, many focused on the Baldrige Award criteria and performance measurement.  In addition, he has performed extensive service in other state and local quality award programs, specifically with the Ohio Partnership for Excellence, Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce, City of Cincinnati Seasongood Innovation Award Program, U.S. Army Communities of Excellence Award, and Alaska Performance Excellence.  He was invited twice to China to speak to local business leaders and advise city and provincial quality award programs.  Currently, he is the Editor of the Quality Management Journal for ASQ and has served on numerous other journal editorial boards.

Professor Evans is Fellow of the Decision Sciences Institute and past president (1997-98).  He also served as national Program Chair in 1993 and in numerous other capacities within the Institute.  In 2000, he received the Dennis E. Graowig Distinguished Service Award.

His eclectic textbook writing includes books in mathematics, operations management, statistical process control, Six Sigma, network optimization, simulation and risk analysis, and statistics and decision modeling.  These are:
